Teen Lifeguard Saves Boy From Powerful California Waves

A teenage lifeguard became a hero when powerful waves swept a young boy into the ocean off Santa Cruz, California last Saturday.

The 16-year-old lifeguard spotted the child struggling in the relentless surf and immediately dove into action. Video captured by witness Scott Vander Dussen shows the young lifeguard pulling the boy from under the crashing waves as they battered the shoreline.

"The waves caught a lot of people off guard," Vander Dussen told NBC Bay Area. "Unfortunately, this young man was overwhelmed and swept out in just a moment's time."

A second lifeguard and beachgoers rushed to help bring the boy safely to shore. Paramedics checked him over before releasing him to his relieved parents.

The rescue was just one of at least 25 that Santa Cruz County lifeguards performed that day as huge swells hammered the coast. The challenging conditions tested even experienced swimmers and created dangerous situations throughout the area.
