Teen Lifeguard's First Rescue Saves Boy From Massive Waves

When 10-year-old swimmer got swept 15 yards into the Pacific Ocean by massive waves last Saturday, rookie lifeguard Ryder Williams made a split-second decision that saved his life. The 16-year-old told his father later he simply refused to let go, knowing the boy would almost certainly die if he did.

Video captured by photographer Scott Vander Dussen shows Ryder sprinting into enormous waves at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, reaching the struggling child and clutching him tight. Wave after wave crashed over them both as several bystanders tried to help but got pushed back by the powerful surf.

Ryder somehow maintained his grip as the ocean tossed them around like ragdolls. Eventually a fellow lifeguard reached them and helped bring the boy safely to shore.

The dramatic footage went viral online, with thousands calling Ryder a hero. But the teen has no idea because he's not on social media, according to his father Shane, a retired firefighter.

"He told me he doesn't know why everyone was blowing this out of proportion," Shane said. "His comments to me are like, 'Any other lifeguard on duty would do the same thing I did.'"

Why This Inspires

Ryder's rescue wasn't luck or instinct alone. His father says the teen has been preparing his whole life for this moment.

Shane and Ryder's mother took him on beach cruises as a baby near the Santa Cruz cliffs. He started swimming lessons young, then surfing and boogie boarding like his father and grandfather.

By age six, Ryder could swim completely on his own. He went on to excel at water polo, playing hole set, a position where opponents constantly try to pull you underwater.

"We'd joke about being uncomfortable with everyone trying to drown our boy," Shane said. But that comfort battling in the water translated perfectly to years of junior lifeguard training.

Ryder fought through four days of fever to complete the California state parks lifeguard academy and start his rookie year. Saturday's rescue was his first of 34 reported that weekend as the National Weather Service warned of dangerous waves from distant tropical cyclones.

His second rescue came hours later when he helped save two more people in even tougher conditions. The only difference? Nobody caught that one on camera.

"He sees what happened Saturday as his job, his duty," Shane said, his voice emotional. "I'm super, super proud of him."
