When Ethan Pham watched his grandparents suffer through 105-degree heat in France this summer, climate change stopped being a headline and became family.

The Milpitas High School student returned home with a revelation. Fighting climate change doesn't require waiting for breakthrough inventions when we can build affordable homes near buses and trains today.

His logic is simple but powerful. When families can afford to live near work, school, and public transit, they drive less. Less driving means fewer emissions, and transportation accounts for 39 percent of California's greenhouse gases.

In Santa Clara County, rising housing costs push families farther from their jobs. Those longer commutes fill roads with cars and fill the atmosphere with carbon.

Milpitas is already moving in the right direction. The city plans to add 6,713 housing units by 2031, many near schools, jobs, and public transportation. Projects like Mosaic Court show how affordable housing can strengthen communities while cutting car dependence.

But Pham wants more. He's calling for better bike lanes, improved sidewalks, and expanded public transit on major roads like Main Street. These changes would help both seniors and young people who can't drive get around safely.
