Teen Raises $576 for Police With Ice Cream Social

When Gloria Go wanted to support her local police department, she didn't organize a formal gala or send out donation requests. She grabbed some ice cream and invited her neighbors to stop by.

The Mercer Island High School junior hosted Scoops for MIPD on August 22 at Mercer Island United Methodist Church. The casual afternoon event combined ice cream, live music from fellow students, and a chance to meet local officers face to face.

The fundraiser brought in $576 in cash donations, with additional contributions flowing directly to the North Sound Police Foundation through an online link. Every dollar will support police departments across six Washington communities, including Mercer Island, Lake Forest Park, Lake Stevens, Issaquah, Medina, and Mill Creek.

Four Mercer Island officers attended the event, mingling with attendees and showing appreciation for the community support. Officers Bobby Jira, Ty McDowell, Jack Baker, and Kristina Lum spent the afternoon connecting with residents in a relaxed, friendly setting.

Student musicians Derek Hsi, Oliver Lee, Owen Clarkson, and Finn Bunker provided live entertainment throughout the event. Their performances added to the neighborhood block party atmosphere Gloria envisioned.

The North Sound Police Foundation, based in Mill Creek, provides resources and support that help officers serve their communities more effectively. These funds fill gaps in department budgets and support programs that strengthen relationships between police and residents.

The Ripple Effect

Gloria's simple idea created something bigger than a fundraiser. Her event built bridges between teenagers and officers, giving both groups a chance to see each other as neighbors rather than strangers.

The success of Scoops for MIPD shows how one student with an idea and some ice cream can strengthen an entire community, one scoop at a time.
