Sara Curtis turned two days in Paris into a moment that will last a lifetime, smashing the 50-meter backstroke world record twice in 48 hours.

The 19-year-old Italian swimmer first broke the record during Wednesday's semifinals at the European Aquatics Championships, clocking 26.63 seconds. Then on Thursday, she went even faster in the final, touching the wall at 26.56 seconds to win gold and cement her place in swimming history.

Curtis took nearly a quarter-second off the previous world record of 26.86, set by Australia's Kaylee McKeown in October 2023. In swimming, where races are often decided by hundredths of a second, that's a massive leap forward.

When she finished Thursday's race, France's Mary-Ambre Moluh, who placed second, immediately embraced Curtis in celebration. The moment captured the pure joy of watching someone achieve what seems impossible.
