Teen Swims 4km to Save Family Stranded 14km at Sea

Austin Appelbee was barely keeping his head above water when his mom gave him an impossible mission: swim to shore and get help. The 13-year-old from Western Australia didn't hesitate.

On January 30th, Austin's family was enjoying a holiday at Quindalup, about 250 kilometers south of Perth. They rented paddleboards and a kayak to explore the vast Geographe Bay.

Around noon, everything changed. Rough ocean winds and currents started dragging them out to sea, away from the safety of shore.

Austin's mother Joanne told her eldest son to swim for it. While she stayed behind with 12-year-old Beau and eight-year-old Grace, Austin battled a strong current for 4 kilometers to reach land.

The newly released audio of his triple-zero call shows just how calm and precise Austin remained under pressure. "We couldn't get back to shore and mum told me to go back to get help," he told the operator, shivering on the beach.

Despite showing signs of hypothermia, Austin provided critical details. He described the colors of their paddleboards, exactly when they entered the water, and urged dispatch to send a helicopter.

"Mum said: 'Go get help'. We were in massive trouble," he said in the recording.

His information proved lifesaving. At 8:30pm that evening, a search helicopter spotted Joanne, Beau, and Grace still wearing life jackets and clinging to a paddleboard. They had drifted 14 kilometers offshore.

Acting Sergeant Andrew McDonnell called Austin's actions "nothing short of extraordinary." In a moment when most kids would panic, this teenager kept his composure and remembered every detail that mattered.

The family's situation was dire. They'd been in the water for over eight hours, and daylight was fading fast. Without Austin's precise information, the coordinated response involving police, Marine Rescue volunteers, and St John Ambulance might not have reached them in time.

Many of those rescuers were local volunteers who serve their community without pay. Austin's courage activated a chain of heroes that night, all working together to bring a family home safe.
