Teen Tennis Star Consoles Injured Idol at US Open

When Mirra Andreeva won her fourth-round US Open match, she didn't celebrate. Instead, she sprinted to help her injured opponent off the court.

Anastasia Potapova jarred her knee badly during the final game of their match at Louis Armstrong Stadium. Andreeva immediately ran to check on her, helping the 24th seed to her feet and asking staff to bring ice.

The French Open champion then finished the match with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 victory before jogging back around the net for a long embrace. Potapova appeared to be in tears as the two Russian-born players hugged at center court.

"It's not the perfect end to the match," said 19-year-old Andreeva after advancing to her first US Open quarterfinal.

The compassion ran even deeper because of their history. Andreeva grew up watching Potapova dominate junior tennis, including a Wimbledon junior championship in 2016.

"For me, Nastya, she was always like a prodigy," Andreeva explained. "She came on tour early and had a lot of wins. I remember we were all watching and cheering for her when she won juniors Wimbledon."

Though Potapova beat Andreeva in their first meeting in 2022, the younger player has won their last four matches. But winning hasn't damaged their friendship.

"She was so nice," Andreeva said. "Since then we would practice together, and just like that, the more you see each other, the more you spend time together, then you just talk about everything."

Tennis often gets labeled as an individual sport where players focus only on winning. But Andreeva and Potapova showed something different: that competitors can support each other even in defeat.
