Teen Wins $50K Scholarship to Fight California Air Pollution

Mia Vides Hannon walked onto her high school campus earlier this month expecting an ordinary day. Instead, Edison International representatives surprised her with news that would change her future: a $50,000 scholarship to pursue her dream of cleaning California's air.

The Hesperia High School senior earned the 2026 Edison Scholar award, making her one of just 30 students selected from across Southern California. Her family, friends, and teachers gathered on campus to celebrate the life-changing moment.

Mia plans to study environmental science in college with a laser focus on air pollution. Growing up in Southern California, she's witnessed firsthand how smog and poor air quality affect communities and natural landscapes. Now she's determined to protect the state's environment for future generations.

"This planet is my home and I plan on doing everything to preserve its beauty and health for the whole of mankind," Mia said. Her path forward includes deepening her education through research, internships, and hands-on community cleanup efforts throughout California.

Edison International launched its scholarship program in 2006 to support students who combine academic excellence with a passion for making their communities better. The program specifically targets high school seniors living in Southern California Edison's service area who plan to study STEM fields.
