Teen With Size 23 Feet Gets Free Shoes, Guinness Record

Finding shoes for your teenager shouldn't be impossible, but for Rebecca Kilburn of Goodrich, Michigan, it became a painful reality her son Eric endured for years.

Eric Kilburn Jr. stood 6'10" at age 14 and wore a size 23 shoe. His feet were so large that he played high school football without proper cleats, leading to a sprained ankle and severe ingrown toenails. Two of his toenails had to be permanently removed.

The family once found five pairs of size 21 shoes at a Nike outlet, originally made for NBA player Tacko Fall. Eric quickly grew out of them. Their only remaining option was custom orthopedic shoes at $1,500 per pair, with no guarantee he wouldn't outgrow them in months.

Rebecca shared her story with Hometown Life in March 2023, not knowing it would spark a movement. Within days, major brands responded. Under Armour flew a product lead to Michigan to measure Eric's feet and create custom athletic shoes. PUMA, Reebok with help from Shaquille O'Neal, and CAT Footwear all stepped up to provide shoes and boots.

A GoFundMe campaign started by Kara Pattison raised nearly $20,000 in just over a week. The Kilburns used the money to create a dedicated bank account for Eric's future footwear and specialized sports equipment, including properly fitting helmets and pads.

"It's been overwhelming," Rebecca told reporters through happy tears. "It's the coolest thing to be able to say we did it! He has shoes!"

The Ripple Effect

Eric's story didn't just solve one family's problem. In 2024, Guinness World Records recognized him for having the largest feet and hands of any living teenager. His 13.5-inch feet measure about a men's size 23, and his hands span 9.13 inches.

Rebecca channeled the attention into something bigger. She founded the Big Shoe Network, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people who struggle to find gear that fits their unique sizes.

What started as a mother's desperate plea became a global solution for families who thought they had nowhere to turn.
