Tennessee Firefighters Free Trapped Hawk in Cosby

When firefighters Chief Walt Cross and Josh Smith finished responding to a call in Cosby, Tennessee, they didn't expect their day would include saving a wild hawk from certain death.

The Grassy Fork Fire & Rescue team spotted a red-shouldered hawk trapped in a fence line along Greasy Cove Road on January 31. The bird's foot was caught, and without help, it faced a grim fate in the winter weather.

Video of the rescue shows Cross carefully holding the struggling hawk while Smith worked to free its trapped foot. The bird stayed remarkably calm as the two men worked together, their training in delicate rescue operations coming into play for an unusual patient.

Once freed, Cross carried the hawk up a hill toward the road and released it in an open area where it could fly safely. The bird took off without injury, returning to the Tennessee skies.

Red-shouldered hawks typically hunt from perches, waiting patiently before swooping down to catch small mammals, reptiles, or amphibians. This hawk may have been chasing prey when it became entangled in the fence, turning hunter into the one needing rescue.
