Tennessee Plans Dolly Parton International Airport

Tennessee is preparing to honor one of its brightest stars in a way that will welcome millions of visitors for generations to come.

Governor Bill Lee announced Friday he supports renaming Nashville International Airport after Dolly Parton, the legendary singer and humanitarian who died Tuesday at age 80. Lee said the tribute would create "a lasting legacy" for someone who inspired countless people through her 11 Grammy-winning music career and charitable work.

"Dolly Parton's extraordinary life is forever woven into the fabric of our state," Lee said. Nashville's airport is where Tennessee welcomes the world, making it the perfect place to greet travelers with Parton's enduring legacy of music, generosity, faith, and kindness.

The proposal gained quick momentum after Parton's passing. A plane towing a banner urging the name change flew over the state capitol Friday, while an online petition gathered more than 150,000 signatures in days.

Doug Kreulen, president of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority, said the airport shares Parton's belief that dignity, kindness, and opportunity should never depend on where you come from. "Whether you are boarding a private aircraft or taking your first flight, you deserve to be welcomed, respected and served with the same level of care," he said.

The Ripple Effect

Parton's impact on Tennessee extends far beyond her music. She was beloved for her literacy programs, COVID-19 research funding, and support for communities throughout the state.

Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell hinted this is just the beginning of tributes honoring the singer. Before her death, Parton was developing a hotel and museum called SongTeller, which she called her "love letter to Nashville."

"Now it's our turn to share a love letter to Dolly," O'Connell said. The city is working closely with Parton's family on additional public recognition.

The airport authority is scheduled to address the proposal at a meeting on September 17. Lee confirmed he had previously discussed the idea with Parton and her team, who were "touched" by the gesture.
