Tennessee Students Earn $1.2B in Lifetime Gains

Over 1,700 Sullivan County students just unlocked an estimated $1.2 billion in future earnings, and it all comes down to mentors who believed in them.

The nonprofit tnAchieves kicked off its statewide Prosperity Tour in Kingsport on Monday, bringing exciting news about local student success. The organization supports Tennessee high schoolers and college students through programs like Tennessee Promise, pairing them with mentors who guide them from graduation through college and into good careers.

President and CEO Krissy DeAlejandro shared data that shows the program's impressive reach. tnAchieves now serves 92% of high school seniors and 89% of community college graduates across Tennessee.

Sullivan County's results are particularly strong. The area boasts an 83% FAFSA filing rate, matching the state average and crushing the national rate of 59%. Tennessee leads the entire country in helping students access financial aid for college.

The numbers tell a story of real community impact. Local students completed over 152,000 hours of community service while pursuing their education. Nearly 800 Sullivan County students shared $270,932 in COMPLETE grant funding to help cover college costs.

DeAlejandro highlighted Sullivan County's work-based learning programs as among the best in the state. "I don't know of a better region in work-based learning," she said during the presentation at the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce.

Local education leaders from Northeast State Community College, Kingsport City Schools, and Sullivan County Schools gathered to discuss how they can better support students together. Jeff McCord, president of Northeast State, summed up their mission simply: "We're trying to help this person who's trying to learn their way to a better life."

The Ripple Effect

When students succeed, entire communities prosper. Those 1,730 graduates won't just earn more money for themselves. They'll buy homes, start businesses, and invest back into Sullivan County for decades to come.

The estimated $1.2 to $1.3 billion in lifetime earnings represents thousands of families lifted into financial stability. It means kids who can afford college, medical bills getting paid, and retirements that feel secure instead of scary.

Beyond the financial impact, these students are already giving back. Their 152,353 hours of community service have strengthened local nonprofits, schools, and neighborhood organizations across the county.

The program's success is creating a positive cycle. Students who receive mentorship often become mentors themselves, passing forward the guidance that changed their lives.

There's still work to do. Sullivan County needs 137 more mentors to support current students who are waiting for that crucial connection. The time commitment is manageable, but the impact lasts a lifetime.

The Prosperity Tour continues through October 1, visiting all 67 Tennessee counties to share local data and inspire more community members to get involved. Every mentor recruited means another student gets the support they need to reach their full potential and contribute to Tennessee's growing prosperity.
