Tennis Star Wins After Being 5-0 Down and Match Point Away

When you're down 5-0 in the final set and your opponent has match point, most players would be thinking about their post-match press conference. Zheng Qinwen decided to write a different ending.

The Olympic champion rallied from the brink of elimination to defeat Madison Keys 1-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 at the US Open on Saturday. She won seven consecutive games to complete one of the tournament's most remarkable comebacks.

Keys, the 2025 Australian Open champion and crowd favorite, wrapped up the first set in just 23 minutes. The match appeared over when she surged to a 5-0 lead in the third set and earned match point.

But Zheng refused to quit. Point by point, game by game, she clawed her way back into the match.

"I am just telling myself never give up," the Chinese star said after throwing herself to the floor in relief. "Somehow, little by little, it just happened."

The comeback is even more meaningful given what Zheng has endured over the past year. After reaching the Australian Open final and winning Olympic gold in 2024, she underwent elbow surgery last July to fix a chronic injury.

Nine months on the sidelines dropped her ranking from a career-high fourth to 160th in the world. For the first time in four years, she had to play qualifying rounds just to reach the main draw of a Grand Slam.

"I was even crying after I won the third match to reach the main draw," Zheng said. "I fight so hard just to start like everyone else."

Three months ago at the French Open, she couldn't hold back tears during a press conference after losing in the first round. "After coming back from injury I felt I lost the energy and I forgot how to compete," she admitted.

Zheng's journey reminds us that setbacks don't define us. Her willingness to start over, to fight through qualifying rounds and question her own abilities, shows the kind of resilience that transcends sports.

Even her composure during the comeback revealed her growth. When a baby's cry interrupted her serve at a crucial moment, she smiled instead of getting frustrated. "It's just a baby," she joked. "I can't do anything, you know?"

Zheng becomes the first qualifier to reach the US Open women's fourth round since Emma Raducanu, who won the entire tournament in 2021. She's now on a six-match winning streak in New York.
