Terminally Ill Dad Marries Longtime Love After 20 Years
Dean Pennell waited two decades to marry his partner because raising 10 kids came first. When doctors gave him weeks to live, hospital staff made his dream come true in just six days.
After 20 years of putting his children first, a terminally ill father finally said "I do" to the woman he proposed to two decades ago.
Dean Pennell, 63, met Kay Beaman, 62, in Basildon, Essex, 24 years ago through their children. He proposed early in their relationship, but the couple chose to skip the wedding and focus their money on raising their blended family of 10 kids instead.
When doctors told Pennell he had just weeks to live due to terminal cancer, the couple decided to move up their wedding plans. Hospital staff at Colchester Hospital in Essex, England, pulled off the impossible, organizing a full ceremony in less than a week.
On June 18, Pennell stood up to marry Beaman, surrounded by their children, some of their 18 grandchildren, and close friends. Despite his exhaustion, he insisted on standing for as much of the ceremony as possible.
"I am absolutely elated," Beaman told reporters. "We have waited a long time, and it's so special to be able to celebrate our marriage here, with our families."

She described how her partner called her every morning from his hospital bed, counting down the days until their wedding. His excitement never wavered, even as his health declined.
Why This Inspires
This story captures what love really looks like when life gets hard. For two decades, Pennell and Beaman chose their children's needs over their own dreams, building a life together without the official title.
The hospital staff who made this wedding happen in six days showed how small acts of kindness can create unforgettable moments. Ward manager Lucy Everett said it was her first hospital wedding, calling it a pleasure to help the couple.
The East Suffolk and North Essex Foundation Trust gave the newlyweds a special gift: a clock stopped at the exact moment they said "I do."
Pennell is now home with his wife, and as Beaman says, they're living life to suit them.
