For the first time ever, Tesla is officially bringing its electric vehicles to Africa, marking a historic moment for clean transportation on the continent.
Starting mid-2026, Moroccans will be able to buy brand new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles from official Tesla dealerships. The cars will come with full warranties and service support, something that wasn't available before when Tesla fans had to import vehicles on their own.
Morocco was the logical first choice. European tourists have been driving their Teslas there for years, which led Tesla to install Supercharger stations in the country. A passionate local fanbase had already been finding creative ways to get Tesla vehicles, proving the demand existed.
The move comes as Morocco's car market is booming. Over 235,000 new cars sold there in 2025, up 33% from the previous year. Most were gas-powered vehicles, leaving plenty of room for electric alternatives.

This launch opens the door to bigger opportunities across Africa's 54 countries. South Africa, for example, sold nearly 600,000 new vehicles in 2025, three times Morocco's market size. That's larger than many countries where Tesla has operated for years.
The Ripple Effect
New car brands are proving they can succeed quickly in African markets. Chinese brands Omoda and Jaecoo sold over 20,000 vehicles in South Africa since launching in 2023. Their plug-in hybrids are particularly popular, with nearly 600 units sold, showing growing interest in electric mobility.
Several African countries now have policies that encourage electric vehicle adoption, creating even more potential markets for Tesla to explore. The energy side of Tesla's business already has a foothold, with Powerwall battery systems available in South Africa since the first generation.
The numbers tell a promising story. With over 96% of new vehicles in major African markets still running on gas, there's enormous room for electric vehicles to grow. As charging infrastructure expands and more people see Teslas on their roads, the momentum could build quickly.
Africa's first official Tesla dealerships represent more than just one company entering a new market—they signal a turning point for clean transportation across an entire continent.
