Texas Beach Cleanup Collected 1,560 Pounds of Trash Last Year

When volunteers filled a dump trailer to capacity with 1,560 pounds of beach trash last year, organizers knew they had something special on their hands.

The 2nd Annual Reel Deal Beach Clean-Up returns Saturday evening at Michael J. Ellis Beach in Corpus Christi, building on last year's stunning success. The event runs from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. directly in front of the Michael J. Ellis parking lot behind the Wyndham Hotel.

This year's cleanup sweetens the deal with an inventive prize system that rewards environmental action. Volunteers earn raffle tickets by filling trash bags: one ticket for a yellow beach bag, two for a standard kitchen bag, and more for larger contractor bags.

Grand prizes include an 8'1" Torq Longboard Surfboard for first place and an IGLOO rolling cooler packed with features like a built-in phone charger, water dispenser, and rod holders for second place. Local businesses donated gift cards from Academy, Target, Whataburger, Sonic, and Starbucks, along with BBQ grills.

Free food, drinks, and live performances by local artists keep the festive atmosphere going while volunteers work. Registration happens right on the beach when participants arrive.

The same Saturday offers two other free community events across the Coastal Bend. Families can bring foam blasters to a Nerf battle with target practice and loaded nachos at CCFUMC Gym from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., while coffee lovers can sample six premium beans from around the world at Harvill's Coffee House in Kingsville from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Last year's beach cleanup removed enough debris to fill an entire donated dump trailer, but the impact goes far beyond clean sand. Every piece of plastic and trash pulled from Michael J. Ellis Beach protects marine life, prevents ocean pollution, and preserves the coastline for future generations.
