Texas DoorDash Driver Hit by Suspect's Car, Delivers Anyway

When a burglary suspect's car hit a Houston DoorDash driver during a police chase, she had every reason to call it quits. Instead, she got up, grabbed the food, and completed the delivery.

The driver was making a delivery in a Houston neighborhood when Torrance Whitaker, fleeing from police during an attempted traffic stop, struck her with his car. She was knocked onto the hood as he sped past.

The impact sent the food order flying into the street. While Whitaker abandoned his car and ran through nearby yards, the driver slid off the hood and picked up the meal.

Without hesitation, she continued on foot to complete the delivery while police officers chased the suspect on foot. Neighborhood security cameras captured the entire sequence.

"I was on the phone with my husband, and I just hear somebody crash," witness Lily Portillo told KTRK. Her cameras recorded the incident from start to finish.

"It's amazing how the girl just delivered the food. I asked her if she was OK, and she said she was OK," Portillo said. "She needs a big tip."

Houston Police eventually caught Whitaker with the help of a K-9 unit after he jumped fences and ran through multiple yards. He was charged with aggravated assault for hitting the driver while fleeing from police.

The driver, who chose not to be identified, spoke with local media afterward. She's in significant pain but avoided breaking any bones and plans to file an insurance claim against the suspect.
