Texas Firefighter's Final Mission: Find Wife a Kidney

After more than 30 years protecting Fort Worth, firefighter Todd Brook faces his toughest battle yet. Diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer in October 2025 and given three to six months to live, he's refusing to give up on the person who matters most.

His wife Jennifer needs a kidney transplant after being diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease. The couple had a plan: Todd would donate one of his kidneys to her after 16 years together.

"With the diagnosis of cancer, I got kicked out of the pool," Todd told CBS News. Now, finding Jennifer a donor has become his final mission.

The cancer, likely caused by carcinogen exposure during his firefighting career, has progressed rapidly. Todd can barely open his eyes or speak, but when Jennifer asked if he still wanted her to do media interviews about her kidney search, his answer was immediate.

"He'll squeeze a hand or lift an eyebrow," Jennifer shared with WFAA-TV. "And as soon as I asked him if he still wanted me to do the interview, it was an apparent 'yes'."

Jennifer's kidney function has dropped to 22%. At 20%, she'll become eligible for a transplant through the UT Southwestern Living Donor Program. Without a donor, she'll need dialysis.

She knew this day would come eventually, just not while her husband was fighting for his life. "I always knew I would need a kidney transplant," she told KXAS-TV. "I just didn't realize it would come now."

Love shows up in countless ways, but few are as powerful as this. Todd, unable to speak and barely responsive, is still fighting for Jennifer with everything he has left. His determination has turned a personal crisis into a beacon of hope for others waiting for transplants.

Jennifer remains optimistic that a donor will come through, and her hope extends beyond her own need. "The ultimate goal would be for me to get a kidney, but for others to get one also," she told WFAA-TV.

About 90,000 Americans are currently waiting for kidney transplants. Jennifer's biggest dream is receiving hers while Todd is still here to celebrate with her.
