Texas Middle School Scores 92, Earns Top State Rating

A Houston-area middle school serving mostly low-income students just proved that demographic challenges don't have to limit academic success.

Woodland Acres Middle School in Galena Park earned a 92 out of 100 on Texas' 2026 accountability ratings, landing it firmly in the A category. The school also collected all seven distinction awards available to it, recognizing excellence across reading, math, science, social studies, and student growth.

The results are especially meaningful because 87% of Woodland Acres students come from economically disadvantaged families. Despite serving a population that often faces extra barriers to academic success, the school outperformed many campuses with more resources.

Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath selected the campus for a special recognition visit Friday afternoon. He's spotlighting Galena Park Independent School District as an example of what's possible when schools focus on the right strategies.

The school's strongest performance came in School Progress, where it scored 92. This category measures how much students are actually learning and growing, not just how they compare to others on a single test day.

Woodland Acres also earned a 92 in Relative Performance, which compares the campus to other schools serving similar percentages of low-income students. That score suggests the school isn't just succeeding despite challenges but because of intentional approaches that work for its specific student body.

The Ripple Effect

Galena Park ISD serves more than 20,800 students across 21 schools. If other campuses in the district can learn from Woodland Acres' success, thousands more students could benefit from whatever strategies are working inside those classrooms.

The district itself earned a B rating with an 87 overall score in 2025, showing steady improvement across multiple schools. Woodland Acres' A rating demonstrates that even within a good district, individual campuses can reach excellence.

Parents now have detailed data showing not just that their school is performing well, but specifically where it excels. The seven distinctions span every major subject area, meaning students are getting strong instruction across the board, not just in tested subjects.

State officials plan to discuss what changed in classroom instruction and which teaching methods made the biggest difference. Those answers could provide a roadmap for other schools serving similar student populations across Texas and beyond.
