Texas School District Jumps to A Rating in Two Years

A Texas school district just proved that focused teamwork can transform student outcomes in record time.

Rockwall ISD, serving approximately 19,000 students across 26 campuses, jumped from an 87 state rating in 2024 to a 91 A rating in 2026. The Texas Education Agency released the accountability ratings in August, marking a significant milestone for the district east of Dallas.

The numbers tell an even better story beyond the overall grade. Rockwall ISD more than doubled its distinctions from 13 in 2025 to 32 in 2026, including nine for closing achievement gaps and eight for academic growth.

Distinctions recognize exceptional performance in specific areas, rewarding schools that help struggling students catch up and ensure all kids are advancing. Earning 32 of them signals the district isn't just helping top performers but lifting everyone up.

All three district high schools maintained A ratings. Rockwall High School scored 96, Rockwall-Heath High School earned 95, and Rockwall Quest Academy achieved 92.

Superintendent Dr. John Villarreal credits the success to coordinated effort across every level. "This work is intentional, meaningful, and forever important because every student deserves our very best in education," he said.

The achievement reflects what happens when school boards, teachers, staff, families, and students align around a shared goal. In an era when many school districts struggle with post-pandemic learning gaps, Rockwall's trajectory shows rapid improvement is possible with the right focus and community support.

The distinctions for closing achievement gaps are particularly meaningful. They demonstrate the district isn't leaving any student behind, ensuring kids from all backgrounds have access to quality education and support.
