Texas Solar and Wind Beat Record Heat Without Blackouts

Mind Blown

Texas sailed through its hottest summer on record without a single power alert, thanks to massive investments in solar, wind, and battery storage. The state's grid ran on majority clean energy for 94% of summer days.

This summer could have been a disaster for Texas. Record-breaking heat pushed electricity demand to an all-time high of 91.3 gigawatts, the kind of pressure that would have triggered conservation alerts or rolling blackouts just three years ago.

Instead, Texans barely noticed. Air conditioners hummed along without interruption, and the grid held strong through every scorching day.

The reason? Texas quietly became the clean energy champion of the South. Since 2020, the state added 95% of its new power capacity from solar, wind, and battery storage, reaching a total of 95 gigawatts of clean energy capacity.

Environmental Defense Fund analyzed power data from ERCOT, the grid that serves 90% of Texas. For 94% of summer days between June and August, clean energy sources like solar, wind, and nuclear powered more than half the grid at some point each day.

On 16 of those days, clean power climbed above 75% of total generation. The state even hit 96% clean power on one spring day in March.

Texas leads the nation in wind energy and has topped California in solar deployment every year since 2021. Those wide open plains and endless sunshine turned out to be perfect for capturing clean power.

The state's success started with smart policy choices in 1999. Texas restructured its power market to encourage competition and required utilities to include renewable energy in their mix. In 2013, the state invested $7 billion in transmission lines to carry wind power from West Texas into cities.

That infrastructure now serves both wind and solar farms. Solar generation has exploded from nearly zero in 2013 to 14% of total power today.

The Bright Side

Texas proves that clean energy isn't just good for the planet. It's reliable when you need it most. The state's competitive energy market puts the cheapest power on the grid first, and solar and wind cost nothing to fuel once they're built.

Battery storage filled the gaps when the sun set or winds calmed. The combination kept prices stable and lights on through extreme demand.

Other states facing similar heat waves and growing power needs now have a roadmap. Build diverse clean energy sources, invest in transmission, and let competition drive innovation.

Texas kept cool this summer while cutting emissions and proving clean energy can handle anything the weather throws at it.
