🦸 Hero Alert

Nataly Alvarez balanced raising her 8-year-old brother and 3-year-old sister while earning her cosmetology license and top grades at Bryan High School. She'll be the first in her family to attend college when she starts at Texas A&M this fall.

While most high school students juggle homework and extracurriculars, Nataly Alvarez added something else to her plate: raising two young siblings while graduating in the top 10% of her class.

The Bryan High School senior managed daily school drop-offs and pickups for her 8-year-old brother David, coordinated his church classes, Kumon tutoring, and soccer schedule, and cared for her 3-year-old sister. Her mother can't drive, and her father works long hours, making Nataly the family's second mom since childhood.

"Since I was little, I have always felt like I'm their second mom," Alvarez said. "I'm in charge of taking my brother to and from school in the mornings and afternoons."

But family duties didn't stop her academic ambitions. She transferred to Bryan High before her sophomore year and immediately dove into Advanced Placement courses, taking eight AP classes throughout high school. She also completed four dual credit courses with Blinn College while studying cosmetology.

Her dedication to her siblings' education came from her own experience. "I didn't have anyone to help me with mine when I grew up, so that's something I really tried to do with them," she said.

This Saturday, Alvarez will walk across the graduation stage with her cosmetology license already in hand, a three-year achievement that required juggling three-block periods of practical training. She earned AP Scholar recognition for passing three or more AP exams with scores of three or higher and will graduate with nine college credit hours.

Why This Inspires

Sharon Williams, who heads Bryan High's cosmetology department and has taught there for 19 years, sees something special in her student. "She's so delicate, in the sense of she cares about what she does and how she does it," Williams said. "One of the things that I love about her the most is that she interacts, she engages with you."

Alvarez credits her family for inspiring her career path. Both her aunt and mother hold cosmetology licenses, and watching her aunt's salon sparked her childhood dream. When her mother suggested the technical route as an alternative to college, Alvarez chose both.

Her favorite skill? Men's haircuts, a specialty she plans to expand by earning her barber's license in the future.

This fall, Alvarez will make history as the first person in her family to attend college, heading to Texas A&M University. It's a milestone that represents not just her hard work, but her belief that responsibility and dreams can coexist.
