Texas Teen Survives 2% Odds After SUV Crushes His Chest
A 17-year-old walked out of the hospital just four days after a vehicle collapsed on his chest and stopped his heart. Doctors say his complete recovery without any lasting injury defies medical expectations.
Juan Tomelloso Chavez was working under an SUV in Elgin, Texas on May 12 when the lift gave out and thousands of pounds crushed his chest, stopping his heart. The 17-year-old's survival odds were somewhere between 2% and 8%, and his chances of walking away without brain damage or other lasting injuries were even slimmer.
But four days after being airlifted to Dell Children's Hospital in Austin, Juan walked out on his own. No deficits. No lasting damage.
"It definitely was a miracle," said Battalion Chief Eran Denzler of Bastrop/Travis County Emergency Services District No. 1. First responders used hydraulic tools to lift the SUV off Juan's chest, then performed CPR and other life-saving measures at the scene.
Multiple agencies worked together that day. Bastrop County dispatchers coordinated the response while sheriff's deputies and Elgin police secured the scene. Paramedics from the fire district and Acadian Ambulance provided emergency care, and PHI Med 14 flew Juan to the trauma center.

On May 26, all those first responders gathered with Juan and his family at First Baptist Church in Elgin for an emotional reunion. Juan admitted he doesn't remember the accident itself, only waking up in pain at the hospital.
Why This Inspires
Pastor Jason Huddleston reminded the first responders that their countless training hours prepared them for this exact moment. "When you watch a physical resurrection like that, it's biblical stuff," he said.
For Juan, the experience changed everything. "I'm grateful to God for giving me a second chance," he told the crowd. Pastor Huddleston put it plainly: "We don't get these second chances for no reason."
The teenager now sees the world differently, carrying the weight and wonder of a life that almost ended at 17.
