Feel Good

A small Texas city's economic investment has blossomed into 4,450 jobs and millions in community support, crowned with the state's largest wiener dog statue. The Buda Economic Development Corp. proves what happens when a community invests in itself.

Twenty-five years ago, residents of Buda, Texas made a bet on their own future, and it paid off bigger than anyone imagined.

In 2001, Buda voters created the Buda Economic Development Corp. to strengthen their local economy. Since then, the organization has awarded 351 incentives supporting over 225 businesses and invested $72.6 million back into the community.

The results speak for themselves. Major projects backed by Buda EDC now generate $668.6 million in economic impact annually, according to an independent study by The Perryman Group. That investment created more than 4,450 local jobs for families who no longer have to commute far from home.

The organization supported everything from mom-and-pop shops to major brands like Cabela's and H-E-B. Small businesses, restaurants, and service providers received $3.1 million in targeted support to help them take root and thrive in downtown Buda.

"Twenty-five years ago, Buda residents invested in themselves and every project since has been built on that belief," said Jennifer Storm, Buda EDC chief executive officer. "What I'm proudest of is what the numbers stand for: families who found good jobs close to home and small business owners who took a chance on Buda and thrived."

The Ripple Effect

When a community invests in economic development, the benefits multiply across generations. Parents who find good jobs nearby spend more time with their kids instead of stuck in traffic. Small business owners who get a foothold hire neighbors and sponsor local sports teams.

Buda's success shows other small towns a roadmap for growth that preserves character while creating opportunity. The city managed to attract major employers while maintaining the heart and heritage that makes downtown special.

To celebrate the milestone, Buda unveiled a 19-foot-long, 10-foot-tall steel wiener dog sculpture in City Park. The playful statue honors the city's beloved Wiener Dog Races tradition and instantly became Texas's largest wiener dog.

A quarter century of believing in your community creates more than jobs and revenue—it builds a place where people want to stay and grow.
