Texas Town Launches Board to Boost Local Business Growth

A small Texas town just took a big step toward economic growth, and local business owners couldn't be more excited about what comes next.

Progreso launched its first economic development corporation last month, creating a dedicated board to recruit investors and support the businesses already calling the town home. The EDC will work to bring national brands to the area while helping local entrepreneurs access the tools they need to succeed.

"We need to start moving forward, and we're tired of being left behind," said Progreso Mayor Pro-Tem Sandra Estrada. "We are the new face for business in Progreso, and we want to start it off correctly."

For business owners like Magaly Rivera, the timing couldn't be better. Rivera took over Rosita's Restaurant in Progreso four months ago after working at the Harlingen location for 17 years. She knows firsthand that small business owners face challenges they can't tackle alone.

"We have to look for help from the city," Rivera said. "We have to look for that help so the city can help us as a business."

The Ripple Effect

The new EDC will guide business owners to financial programs and resources many didn't know existed. Estrada emphasized that current businesses will get the same support as new ones, creating opportunities for everyone to grow together.

Rivera sees the potential for transformation. If new investors come to town with access to these programs, existing businesses can benefit too, creating a rising tide that lifts the whole community.

The city is now accepting applications for the EDC board, and applicants must live within city limits. This local focus ensures the people making decisions understand what Progreso needs most.
