Texas University Joins Elite Network for First-Gen Students
Southwestern University earned a spot in a prestigious national network dedicated to helping first-generation college students succeed. The Texas school joins 489 institutions working to transform support for students who are the first in their families to attend college.
Southwestern University in Texas just earned recognition as one of 60 new members of the FirstGen Forward Network, joining a nationwide movement to help first-generation college students thrive.
The Georgetown-based university proved its commitment through programs that mentor, support, and champion students breaking new ground for their families. Academic Success Coordinator Jennifer Frias, herself a first-generation graduate, says the recognition validates years of dedicated work by faculty and staff.
"As we place a first-generation college student lens over our work, we not only improve their success but the success of their families and our communities overall," Frias said.
The university already runs seven specialized programs designed specifically for first-generation students. These include Captain's Academy, LatinXcel, and a student-led chapter of Tri-Alpha, the national honor society for first-generation scholars.

FirstGen Forward leaders praised Southwestern's campus-wide approach during the rigorous application process. The university embedded first-generation student success directly into its strategic planning for 2026-2031, showing this isn't just a program but an institutional priority.
The Ripple Effect
Network membership brings monthly workshops, peer learning opportunities, and connection to a nationwide community of institutions sharing best practices. Southwestern can eventually advance to Network Leader and Champion status by demonstrating measurable impact.
Nearly 500 institutions across 49 states and Washington DC now participate in the FirstGen Forward Network. Each one is working to create environments where students without family college experience can truly flourish.
The benefits extend far beyond campus walls. When first-generation students succeed, they open doors for younger siblings, inspire neighbors, and strengthen entire communities through education and opportunity.
FirstGen Forward Interim President Kevin Kruger called Southwestern's selection "both an honor and a call to action," welcoming the university to a movement driving systemic change in higher education.
