Texas Volunteer Named 'Hunger Hero' for Food Bank Work

One volunteer's commitment to feeding hungry families just earned him the title of Hunger Hero, and he's sharing the credit with everyone who serves alongside him.

Mike Ingram received the honor at a special luncheon hosted by Harvest Regional Food Bank in Texarkana, Texas. The longtime volunteer serves on the organization's board, helping coordinate efforts to distribute food across a 10-county region.

"I'm very honored, and I'm accepting it on behalf of all the volunteers," Ingram said. "I'm just one person and I'm proud to be here."

The recognition came during September's Hunger Action Month, a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about food insecurity. Camille Wrinkle, CEO of Harvest Regional Food Bank, said the timing matters because both Arkansas and Texas face some of the highest food insecurity rates in the country.

The need has grown recently, with more families visiting local food pantries than before. Wrinkle explained that pantry shelves are emptying faster, creating urgent demand for fresh supplies and more volunteer hours.

The Ripple Effect

Ingram's work extends far beyond sorting cans and packing boxes. The food bank serves 10 counties across two states, meaning his volunteer hours help feed thousands of families who might otherwise go hungry.

His recognition shines a light on a larger truth: communities fighting hunger need more people like him. The food bank continues recruiting volunteers to meet rising demand, offering anyone a chance to make a real difference in their neighbors' lives.

"We have a great board and great volunteers, and I love being on this board and helping people," Ingram said. He described the mission as simple but powerful: feed people in need.

Every volunteer hour at Harvest Regional Food Bank translates into meals on tables, and Ingram's example shows how one person's dedication can inspire an entire community to act.
