A massive new wind farm just started spinning in Texas, bringing hundreds of megawatts of clean power and a serious economic boost to one community.

RWE, a German energy company transforming itself into a renewable powerhouse, just commissioned the Peyton Creek II wind facility in Matagorda County near Bay City. The 243-megawatt project adds serious muscle to Texas's already impressive wind energy portfolio.

Texas already produces about 28% of America's wind energy, more than any other state. The new facility taps into the region's strong wind resources and existing energy infrastructure, making it a natural fit for expansion.

Peyton Creek II isn't starting from scratch. It builds on the success of Peyton Creek I, which has been operating smoothly since 2020. This phased approach lets developers learn from what worked and scale up smartly.

The project brought together major players including turbine maker Vestas and construction partners Wanzek and RES. Microsoft signed on as a corporate buyer through a long-term power purchase agreement, guaranteeing the clean energy will find a home.

The facility is part of a broader push by RWE that brought about 2 gigawatts of new renewable capacity online across the U.S. recently. That's enough to power roughly 1.5 million homes with clean electricity.
