Texas Wins Back-to-Back NCAA Softball Championships

The University of Texas softball team just proved that champions know how to finish strong, securing their second straight NCAA title with a gutsy 4-1 win over Texas Tech on Thursday night.

The Longhorns found themselves trailing 1-0 after four innings at the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City. But this team doesn't quit when it matters most.

Everything changed in the fifth inning when a bases-loaded throwing error by Texas Tech shortstop Hailey Toney allowed two unearned runs to score. Just like that, Texas had seized a 2-1 lead they would never surrender.

Kayden Henry put an exclamation point on the victory in the seventh inning, launching a home run off Red Raiders ace NiJaree Canady. Leighann Goode added an insurance run with a clutch single, and the celebration was on.

The pitching duo of Citlaly Gutierrez and Teagan Kavan shut down the Texas Tech offense when it counted. Gutierrez allowed just one run on three hits over 4 1/3 innings before Kavan took over, striking out five batters in the final two innings to secure her fifth save of the season.
