Texas WR Darnell Jackson Commits to Utah: 'Felt Like Home

When Darnell Jackson stepped onto the Utah campus, he felt something different from other recruiting visits: he was treated like a person, not just a prospect.

The speedy three-star wide receiver from Spring, Texas committed to the Utah Utes on Monday night, choosing the Salt Lake City program over Texas State and Northwestern. For Jackson, the decision came down to something deeper than football schemes or conference prestige.

"Utah felt like home for me because of how they instantly made me feel a part of their family," Jackson told reporters. The Grand Oaks High School standout noticed something special about how the coaching staff interacted with each other and with him.

Every coach on staff took time to get to know Jackson personally, not just his position coach. That level of attention made him feel valued beyond his athletic ability.

First-year head coach Morgan Scalley and his staff pulled out all the stops. Jackson sat down with offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven and quarterbacks coach Ryan Gunderson to discuss exactly how he'd fit into their offensive scheme, a rare opportunity for most high school recruits.

"What's most exciting is seeing how the coaches fit me into their scheme," Jackson explained. "I feel like I fit perfectly."

His junior season numbers backed up his potential: 29 catches for 430 yards and six touchdowns. More importantly, he helped Grand Oaks reach the postseason and earn the program's first playoff victory in school history.

"The culture itself was amazing," Jackson said. "Utah immediately made me feel like family from the moment I touched down. I felt wanted and I felt loved, and brought in as a family member, not just a player or recruit."
