Thai Doctor Surrenders License to Fight Medical Censorship

After two decades of practicing medicine, Dr. Khongkwan Fujitnirun walked into Thailand's Medical Council offices and handed back her license, choosing freedom of speech over her career as a dermatologist.

Known as "Dr Kate" to her online followers, she'd grown frustrated with a system she says silences knowledgeable doctors while allowing unqualified influencers and fake practitioners to spread medical misinformation unchecked. The Medical Council repeatedly accused her of violating ethics rules whenever she publicly discussed dietary supplements, medical procedures, or health policy.

Dr. Khongkwan, who co-founded the KKC Clinic chain of cosmetic treatment centers, argues the contradiction is dangerous. While she faced disciplinary action for educating her audience about legitimate medical topics, unlicensed sellers freely promote questionable products and procedures with exaggerated claims.

"So who is allowed to speak? Online sellers? Influencers?" she asked in her Friday statement. She pointed out that fake doctors selling illegal injectable drugs operate openly while licensed physicians remain muzzled by vague ethics regulations.

Her battles with the Medical Council went beyond advertising complaints. When she challenged government officials on COVID-19 policies and other public health matters, authorities targeted her with repercussions. She won some cases in Administrative Court, but the council reportedly refused to honor those rulings.

But her public stand puts pressure on a regulatory system she believes punishes education more harshly than actual malpractice.
