Thailand Defeats Japan, Secures 2027 World Cup Spot

Thailand's women's volleyball team just achieved what they've been dreaming about for years: defeating Japan on the sport's biggest Asian stage.

The Thai squad upset the highest-ranked Asian team 3-1 in the semifinals of the 2026 Asian Championship in Tianjin on Saturday. The victory not only sends them to Sunday's final but also secures their spot at the 2027 World Cup.

"We hadn't defeated Japan in some years, and we kept thinking about how we could beat them because we play them every time," said team captain and setter Pornpun Guedpard. Her message to teammates before the match was simple: I believe we can win.

Thailand's Pimpichaya Kokram led the charge with 20 points, while Sasipaporn Janthawisut added 16. Japan's star outside hitter Mayu Ishikawa scored 23 points in the loss, but it wasn't enough to stop the determined Thai team.

The defending Asian champions will now face China in Sunday's final, with an Olympic berth for the 2028 Los Angeles Games on the line. China swept Iran 3-0 in the other semifinal, maintaining their perfect record in the tournament with five straight sweeps.
