Thailand Locks in 500-Ton Durian Deal With China

Thailand's durian growers are celebrating a sweet victory after landing a 500-ton export agreement with one of China's largest fruit markets.

The Department of Intellectual Property led Thai farmers to Shanghai's Huizhan Fruit Wholesale Market, where producers from Sisaket province signed a memorandum of understanding with Chinese importers. The market moves over 100 billion baht worth of fruit annually, making it a major gateway to Eastern China's hungry consumer base.

The trade mission showcased Thailand's geographical indication products from six provinces. These GI certifications work like France's champagne labels, guaranteeing that products come from specific regions known for quality and traditional methods.

The numbers tell an impressive story. Thailand now has over 260 registered GI products worth more than 116 billion baht to the economy. Nearly half of those certified products are fruits, with durian leading the charge as Chinese consumers continue demanding traceable, high-quality produce.

The Ripple Effect

This deal represents more than just one shipment of spiky fruit. The mission took an innovative turn when delegates met with Huawei Technologies to discuss using artificial intelligence and cloud systems to strengthen Thailand's intellectual property protection.

Thai officials want to learn from Huawei's playbook. The tech giant invests over 21 percent of its revenue into research and development, employs more than 114,000 R&D staff, and holds over 165,000 patents globally. Those strategies could help Thailand's farmers and producers better protect their brands and traditional products in international markets.

The discussions focused on improving trademark and patent processes using digital tools. For Thai farmers, stronger intellectual property protection means their regional specialties stay authentic and command premium prices abroad.

Chinese demand for safety, quality, and product traceability keeps growing, creating opportunities for Thailand's certified agricultural sector to expand. When buyers know exactly where their durian came from and how it was grown, everyone wins.
