Thailand Opens Labs to Small Businesses for 80% Off

Small businesses in Thailand can now access the same high-tech labs and research tools that were once only available to big corporations, thanks to a new government initiative that covers up to 80 percent of the cost.

The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation launched an online service catalogue that connects small and medium-sized enterprises with the Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research. Through the platform, business owners can browse scientific services like product testing, quality certification, and research support, then submit requests with a few clicks.

The government subsidizes up to 80 percent of service costs, with a maximum support of 200,000 Thai baht per business. That means a company developing a new food product or medical device can access professional lab testing and certification without the prohibitive price tag that typically keeps smaller players out of the innovation game.

The range of support covers the entire journey from idea to market. Businesses can get technical guidance on product design, collaborate with scientists on research and development, verify their products meet safety standards, and receive help scaling up from prototype to full production.

The services span industries from food and cosmetics to aerospace and clean energy. Companies can also access training programs to build their team's technical skills and get advice on making their operations more environmentally sustainable.

To participate, businesses register for an SME ONE ID and enroll in the Business Development Service system online. Once approved, they can begin working with national research facilities that might have seemed completely out of reach just months ago.

This initiative does more than help individual businesses save money. By opening research infrastructure to thousands of small companies, Thailand is essentially democratizing innovation across its economy.

A small cosmetics maker in Chiang Mai now has the same testing capabilities as a Bangkok corporation.
