Thailand to Train 20 Million People in AI by 2030

Thailand is betting big on artificial intelligence to reshape its future, announcing a plan to train 20 million citizens in AI skills by 2030.

Deputy Prime Minister Yotchanan Wongsawat launched the "AI for All Thais" initiative this week in partnership with Google and True Corporation. The goal is to equip roughly one-third of Thailand's population with the tools to thrive in an AI-driven economy.

The ambitious program targets a pressing national challenge: escaping the middle-income trap that has limited Thailand's economic growth for decades. With an aging population shrinking the workforce, the country needs productivity gains that only technology can deliver.

Thailand currently faces a shortage of 80,000 AI professionals. Rather than focusing solely on university students, the initiative will retrain existing workers across manufacturing, agriculture, and other key industries.

"Upskilling people who already have skills by adding AI is like giving a tiger wings," Wongsawat said. The program particularly aims to help older workers stay productive despite physical limitations that come with age.

The strategy goes beyond basic digital literacy. Thailand plans to position itself as a regional leader in "Physical AI," including industrial robotics, agricultural automation, and medical technology, building on its existing strength in automotive manufacturing.

To attract major tech companies, the government is promoting Thailand's unique datasets in tropical medicine, wellness, and cultural research. These specialized resources could give companies valuable training data for developing AI models that serve Southeast Asia's 600 million people.
