Thousands Pack Hong Kong for Year of the Horse Parade

Thousands of excited spectators staked out prime viewing spots along Hong Kong's Canton Road on Tuesday night, some arriving two hours early to catch the city's annual Lunar New Year parade celebrating the Year of the Horse.

The Cathay International Chinese New Year Night Parade transformed Tsim Sha Tsui into a vibrant street party at 8pm, blending Eastern and Western performances along a route from the Hong Kong Cultural Centre to the Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel. Spectator stand tickets sold out the same day they were released, though crowds still lined the streets for free viewing.

Transport worker Clarence Lam brought his wife and preschool son at 6pm to secure a good spot. "I hope to broaden my son's horizons," he said, eager for his child to see dragon and lion dances performed by young artists.

The parade drew visitors from near and far. Lu Ming, 39, traveled from mainland China's Jiangsu province specifically for the event after hearing about it at his hotel. "The event is vibrant and bustling. I am very happy," the first-time Hong Kong visitor shared.

Swedish exchange students Tia Bjurling and Carolina Aasberg discovered the parade through Instagram posts and made it part of their first Lunar New Year celebration. French insurance broker Nathalie Bluffer went even further, lining up overnight to score coveted spectator seats for her family's first Chinese New Year experience.

The Ripple Effect

The parade showcased Hong Kong's ability to bring together locals and international visitors for shared celebration. From mainland Chinese families to European exchange students, the event created connections across cultures while honoring traditional festivities.

Warm-up performances started at 6pm with 15 local groups entertaining early arrivals through lion dances, rope-skipping displays, and street dance. The main parade featured 12 themed floats celebrating local brands, tourism icons, and cultural traditions, with performers interacting directly with spectators throughout the route.

This year's parade continues a 24-year tradition sponsored by Cathay Pacific Airways, demonstrating Hong Kong's commitment to preserving and sharing its cultural heritage with the world.
