Thunder's Nikola Topic Returns After Beating Cancer

Nikola Topic had every reason to give up on his NBA dream, but Thursday night proved he never stopped fighting.

The Oklahoma City Thunder rookie made his professional debut against the Milwaukee Bucks after successfully completing treatment for testicular cancer. Drafted 12th overall in 2024, Topic faced setback after setback, missing his entire first season with a knee injury and then receiving a cancer diagnosis during the preseason.

The 21-year-old Serbian guard underwent surgery in October, followed by months of chemotherapy. While his teammates practiced and played, Topic fought a different battle entirely.

When he checked into the game late in the first quarter, the Oklahoma City crowd erupted. The ovation recognized not just a player returning from injury, but a young man who refused to let cancer steal his future.

Topic scored his first NBA points on a jumper from near the free throw line early in the second quarter. He finished with two points, one rebound, and one assist in 16 minutes, numbers that don't capture the magnitude of simply being there.

"Just thrilled for him," Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said after the game. "He's obviously been through a ton of adversity in his life in the last couple years."
