Tigers Rookie Kevin McGonigle, 21, Makes MLB All-Star Team

Kevin McGonigle used to sit in the stands at Citizens Bank Park wearing his Phillies jersey, dreaming about watching an All-Star Game in his hometown of Philadelphia. On July 4, the 21-year-old Detroit Tigers rookie learned he'll be playing in one instead.

McGonigle became the fourth Tigers player ever to make the All-Star Game at age 21 or younger, joining baseball legends Al Kaline, Mark Fidrych, and Hal Newhouser. The honor comes just months after he started spring training with a portable locker, the kind typically given to players who get cut.

"It's hard to put into words," McGonigle said. "It's just super-exciting, and looking forward to seeing a lot of family and friends as well."

The young shortstop's rise has been nothing short of remarkable. He skipped Triple-A entirely and made the Tigers roster on Opening Day, where he collected four hits including an RBI double in his first major league at-bat. Just 18 days into his career, Detroit signed him to an eight-year, $150 million contract extension.

Halfway through his first season, McGonigle has posted a 4.4 WAR, making him one of only two American League shortstops with a WAR above 2.4. His performance earned him a spot alongside teammates Riley Greene and Dillon Dingler on the 2026 AL All-Star roster.
