Tigers' Skubal Returns Strong Just Month After Surgery

Just one month after going under the knife, Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal proved he's ready to help his team chase a playoff spot.

Skubal threw five scoreless innings with six strikeouts for High-A West Michigan on Sunday, looking every bit like the dominant pitcher who helped the Tigers reach last year's playoffs. The lefthander needed just eight pitches (all strikes) to retire the side in the first inning, hitting 97 mph on his fastball and touching 99 mph later in the game.

The performance came exactly 31 days after Skubal underwent nanoscopic surgery to remove a loose body from his left elbow. Most pitchers need months to return from elbow procedures, making his rapid recovery a welcome surprise for Detroit.

Skubal allowed just two infield singles across his five innings, showing the same command and velocity that made him one of baseball's toughest pitchers before the injury. He finished his outing in the bullpen to reach his target pitch count of around 75, exactly what the Tigers medical staff wanted to see.

Manager A.J. Hinch emphasized the importance of game action over simulated workouts. "There are things you can't simulate in practice," Hinch said, noting that dealing with bad calls and errors behind you requires real competition.

Why This Inspires

The Tigers chose West Michigan for Skubal's rehab start partly because of favorable weather, but the decision also kept their ace close to home while he builds back to full strength. With fellow injured starters Casey Mize and Justin Verlander also scheduled for rehab starts this week, Detroit could soon have their full rotation healthy for the first time this season.

Skubal could rejoin the Tigers rotation as soon as Friday when Detroit visits Cleveland for a crucial division series. The timing couldn't be better as the Tigers try to climb back into the American League Central race during the season's critical stretch.

"We need these guys to not just get back," Hinch said. "We need them to be good."

Based on Sunday's performance, Skubal looks ready to be exactly that.
