TikTok and the International Chamber of Commerce are training Nigerian small businesses to sell globally through a new digital commerce program launching in Lagos. The free training includes AI tools, online marketing, and potential access to small business loans.

Nigerian entrepreneurs are getting a major boost to compete in the global digital marketplace.

TikTok and the International Chamber of Commerce launched Digital Commerce Labs in Lagos on Thursday, a program designed to help small and medium businesses build digital skills and reach customers worldwide. The initiative is backed by Nigeria's National Information Technology Development Agency and the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund.

The program offers practical training in digital marketing, content creation, audience engagement, online sales, artificial intelligence tools, and cross-border commerce. Hundreds of businesses have already pre-registered for the live training sessions launching in July.

"The world has gone digital. We need Nigerian entrepreneurs to be able to play on a level playing field with entrepreneurs from across the world," said Tokunbo Ibrahim, TikTok's acting head of Government Relations and Public Policy for Sub-Saharan Africa. The goal is to help small businesses grow beyond their local communities and eventually export goods and services internationally.

The timing couldn't be better. Nigeria's social commerce market is projected to reach $2.04 billion in 2025 and nearly $4 billion by 2030, according to ResearchAndMarkets. A GSMA survey found that 56 percent of Nigerian businesses sell exclusively through social media, while another 19 percent combine social media with websites or online marketplaces.

The program will also provide training in financial literacy, business structuring, bookkeeping, taxation, and legal advisory services through the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund. Businesses that complete the program may qualify to apply for small business loans.

The Ripple Effect

The International Chamber of Commerce is tapping into its global network of hundreds of chambers worldwide to build the curriculum. "When it comes to international trade, it's ICC experts who come together to craft a module and lessons that will help SMEs go international," said Charly Gordon, innovation lead at the ICC.

NITDA's Director-General Kashifu Abdullahi noted that platforms like TikTok have evolved beyond entertainment into powerful engines for economic growth. They enable small businesses to reach new audiences, tell their stories, and scale rapidly.

The program will track success through analytics monitoring how registered businesses apply the training to increase their business impact. The ICC wants the training adapted to each business regardless of where they are in their digital commerce journey.

Nigerian entrepreneurs are proving that with the right tools and training, local businesses can become global success stories.
