Tokyo's Cherry Blossoms Arrive Early, Draw Crowds to Parks

Pink petals are already falling across Tokyo, and the city couldn't be happier about it.

Japan's cherry blossom season officially began Thursday when the Japan Meteorological Agency spotted the first blooms on Somei Yoshino trees at Yasukuni Shrine. By Friday morning, families and friends had already spread picnic blankets beneath flowering trees in Ueno Park, one of Tokyo's most popular spots for hanami, or flower viewing.

This year's blossoms arrived five days earlier than usual, thanks to warmer temperatures since mid-February. The season is declared once at least five flowers open on the official sample tree, but observers counted 61 blossoms before making it official this year.

For Tokyo residents, sakura season means more than just pretty flowers. It marks the start of spring gatherings, family outings, and outdoor celebrations that bring communities together after winter. Thousands are expected to visit parks across the city over the coming days.

The cherry blossom season also kicks off one of Tokyo's busiest tourism periods. Visitors from around Japan and the world time their trips to catch the brief but spectacular bloom, which typically lasts just one to two weeks at peak beauty.
