Top Doctors Launch Vaccine Campaign Amid Federal Silence

America's largest medical organizations are filling a surprising gap this flu season: the absence of the federal government's usual vaccine guidance campaign.

The American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Family Physicians, and two other major health groups released their own vaccination recommendations Wednesday. Their message is clear and backed by research: most Americans should get vaccinated against flu, COVID, and RSV.

The timing matters because these diseases still pack a serious punch. Last season, COVID alone killed up to 42,000 Americans and hospitalized 240,000 more, even though the virus is far less dangerous than during the pandemic's peak.

The good news? The vaccines work remarkably well. For adults over 65, COVID shots cut hospitalization risk by 53 percent. Flu vaccines reduce deaths in infants and children by 80 percent. RSV vaccines slash hospitalization rates for people over 60 by up to 83 percent.

Dr. Bruce Gellin from Georgetown University's Vaccine Integrity Project said Americans deserve access to the best scientific evidence, regardless of what's happening at the federal level. The consortium published their safety and effectiveness research in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The recommendations come at a time when vaccine confidence has declined nationwide. The groups acknowledge this challenge head-on, releasing detailed research summaries to help families understand the science behind their guidance.

This collaborative effort shows how medical professionals are adapting to serve their communities in new ways. Dr. Andrew Racine from the American Academy of Pediatrics notes that most families still trust their pediatricians as their primary source of health information, giving doctors a powerful platform to share evidence-based guidance.

The coalition also highlights how vaccination protects the most vulnerable. Pregnant women who get COVID shots reduce their hospitalization risk by 58 percent and pass protection to their babies, who end up with fewer virus-related hospital visits.

For immunocompromised adults, the stakes are even higher. Vaccines cut their risk of intensive care or death from COVID by 32 to 53 percent, offering crucial protection for people who need it most.

The medical groups are also working to ensure access remains strong. Programs like Vaccines for Children, which provides free shots to families who can't afford them, continue serving communities nationwide.
