Toronto Rock One Win Away From First Title Since 2011

After trailing by four goals at halftime, the Toronto Rock roared back to take Game 1 of the National Lacrosse League Finals and now stand just one victory away from their first championship since 2011.

Rookie of the Year CJ Kirst sparked the comeback with three straight goals to start the second half, leading the Rock to a 13-11 victory over the Halifax Thunderbirds on Friday night in Hamilton, Ontario. The win puts Toronto one game away from their seventh NLL championship.

The game started rough for the home team. Halifax dominated the second quarter, outscoring the Rock 5-2 to build a commanding 9-5 lead at halftime.

But the Rock came out flying after the break. Kirst's natural hat trick energized the crowd and pulled Toronto back into contention.

Josh Dawick and Chris Boushy added crucial goals to tie the game 9-9 heading into the final quarter. The teams traded power play goals before Nick Rowlett made a brilliant faceoff play that led to Owen Hiltz tying the game 11-11.

Sam English became the hero just 14 seconds later, scoring what would be the game-winning goal. He sealed the victory with a late breakaway to make it 13-11.

This comeback means everything for a franchise hungry to reclaim glory. The Rock haven't hoisted the championship trophy in 15 years, but their young star Kirst is showing why the future looks bright in Toronto.

Head Coach Matt Sawyer praised both teams for delivering an exciting showcase for the sport. The sellout crowd in Hamilton witnessed exactly the kind of thrilling lacrosse that makes the NLL special.

English credited the team's composure during adversity. "We play our best when our backs are against the wall," he said after the game.

Kirst showed maturity beyond his rookie status, staying calm despite the early deficit. His performance earned him first star honors and reminded everyone why he won Rookie of the Year.

Game 2 takes place Sunday night at the same venue, with Toronto having the chance to clinch and Halifax fighting to force a decisive Game 3.
