Tow Truck Driver Saves Man From Icy Texas Culvert

Most people would never notice a muddy drainage culvert along a highway, especially during a winter ice storm. Tow truck driver Douglas Lane wasn't most people.

While driving through Seagoville, Texas, Lane saw a car stopped in the middle of the road and pulled over to help. That's when he heard desperate shouts coming from the icy water below.

Lane rushed to the culvert and found a man trapped in the frigid water, struggling to stay afloat. Without hesitation, he reached down and grabbed the man's sweatshirt hood, fighting to keep his head above the surface.

Police body camera footage captured the tense moments that followed. Lane held on tight as the freezing water numbed his hands and the man's weight pulled him down. "He gave up fighting to stay above the water," Lane recalled. "I said 'no, you're not going to do that.'"

Lane called 911 while refusing to let go, even as the man began losing strength. Minutes felt like hours as he waited for help, his grip the only thing between life and death.

Officers arrived and immediately formed a human chain, working together to pull the man safely from the culvert. He was rushed to the hospital, where police say he continues to recover.

Police leaders credited Lane's quick thinking with saving the man's life. Officers at the scene thanked him repeatedly for his actions.

Lane brushes off the praise. He says he thinks about that moment every time he drives past the culvert, not because people call him a hero, but because helping others is simply part of who he is.

"I wasn't trying to get any kind of extra credit," Lane said. "I'm just doing what I know best, and that's helping others."
