The sector contributed a staggering $11.6 trillion to the global economy in 2025, according to new data from the World Travel & Tourism Council. That represents nearly 10% of everything produced worldwide, and the 4.1% growth rate left the overall global economy's 2.8% expansion in the dust.

Even more impressive? The industry now supports 366 million jobs worldwide, more people than the entire population of the United States. These aren't just numbers on a spreadsheet. They represent real paychecks for hotel workers in Bangkok, tour guides in Peru, restaurant staff in Paris, and flight attendants crossing every ocean.

The jobs story gets better. Travel and tourism accounted for one in every three new jobs created globally this year. While other sectors struggled to find their footing, this industry became a lifeline for workers and families seeking stability and opportunity.

Asia-Pacific led the charge with a remarkable 8.1% growth rate, powered by reopening momentum and strong regional connections. The region's travel economy reached $3.29 trillion as international visitors flooded back to destinations from Tokyo to Bali.

North America grew more slowly at 1%, reaching $3.05 trillion, but still showed the sector's resilience even in mature markets. The difference between regions highlights how supportive policies and international openness can accelerate recovery and create prosperity.

Perhaps the most telling statistic: 1.54 billion international overnight arrivals happened in 2025. That's 4.2 million people traveling across borders every single day, reconnecting with family, exploring new cultures, experiencing different ways of life, and building bridges between communities.
