Trinity Christian Wins 2nd Baseball Title After 11 Years

The Trinity Christian Conquerors proved that patience and persistence pay off, winning their second state baseball championship exactly 11 years after their first.

The team defeated True North 8-4 in the Class 2A title game in Fort Myers on Tuesday night. Just like their 2015 championship game, a weather delay pushed their start time back more than three hours, but the Conquerors didn't let that shake their focus.

Trinity's roster was stacked with talent this year. Ten players signed with college programs on national signing day, with nine heading to Division I schools.

Head coach Jonathan Murphy knew his team could handle the pressure, so he scheduled them against some of the toughest competition in the country. They faced multiple state champions and teams still competing deep into postseason play across several states.

The road to the championship tested them at every turn. Trinity rallied for a 13-inning win in the district championship game, then came back from a 1-0 series deficit to win back-to-back games in the regional final.

Against True North, the Conquerors showed their resilience once again. After jumping to a 3-0 lead in the second inning with four consecutive two-out hits, they watched the Titans tie it up 3-3 in the third.

Trinity's response was electric. The team scored three runs off two wild pitches and an error, then extended the lead to 8-3 on a clutch two-out single by Jordan Martinez.

When True North threatened in the sixth inning and cut the lead to 8-4, pitcher Romy DeCenzo delivered a rare four-strikeout inning. He struck out three batters with two runners in scoring position to slam the door on any comeback hopes.

The Ripple Effect

This championship means more than one team's success. Trinity's win is part of a historic season for the area, marking only the second time in local history that three teams from the region brought home state baseball championships in the same year.

St. Johns Country Day won the Class 1A title and Union County claimed the Rural championship last week. The only other time three local teams accomplished this feat was 2008, when Bishop Kenny, Providence, and Eagle's View all won their respective state titles.

For a community that has produced 44 baseball state championships over the decades, this season stands out as something special. Young players across the region now have fresh proof that dedication to the sport and commitment to excellence can lead to extraordinary achievements.
