Troy Firefighters Rescue Swimmer After 15-Foot Gorge Fall

When a swimmer fell 15 feet into the rocky waters of Poestenkill Gorge Park on Tuesday, the Troy Fire Department turned a potential tragedy into a rescue success story.

The man had been swimming in an upper pool of the gorge when he lost his footing and plunged into the water below. He drifted in and out of consciousness as the current moved around him, but help was already on the way.

Troy Fire Deputy Chief Jared Barringer and his team faced a challenging scene. The steep, rocky terrain meant they couldn't simply walk down and carry the injured swimmer out. Instead, they rigged a rope system and carefully lowered a rescue basket into the gorge.

For 45 minutes, firefighters worked methodically to secure the man and haul him up the slippery rocks. One firefighter injured his ankle during the operation but kept working until the rescue was complete.

By the time paramedics loaded the swimmer into an ambulance, he was conscious and alert. He was transported to Albany Medical Center for treatment of a head injury. The injured firefighter also received medical care.
