Trucker Saves Unconscious Driver on Tennessee Interstate

A semi-truck was drifting across a busy Tennessee highway with an unconscious driver at the wheel, but one trucker's quick action turned a potential tragedy into a rescue story.

Matt Munson was driving on Interstate 840 in Rutherford County when he noticed something terrifying. The tractor-trailer ahead of him had slowed to a crawl and was weaving dangerously across lanes as cars sped past on all sides.

When Munson pulled alongside the truck, his worst fears were confirmed. The driver was slumped over the steering wheel, clearly in medical distress.

"When I passed him he was laying on his steering wheel and I knew that wasn't right," Munson told WTVF. Dashcam footage captured the harrowing moments as the unmanned semi drifted toward the shoulder, narrowly missing other vehicles.

Munson didn't call 911 and wait. He pulled over a quarter mile ahead, jumped from his cab, and sprinted back toward the rolling semi on foot.

By the time he reached it, the truck had veered onto the shoulder, but Munson knew it could easily roll back into traffic. He climbed into the cab and found the driver unresponsive.

Working quickly, Munson called out to the driver while physically pushing on the man's leg to apply the brakes. The massive vehicle finally came to a complete stop.

Highway patrol later confirmed what anyone watching the dashcam video already knew: Munson's fast response likely prevented a catastrophic crash. The unconscious driver had suffered a medical emergency that left him completely unable to control his vehicle on one of Tennessee's busiest highways.

The semi driver is now recovering, thanks entirely to a stranger who chose action over hesitation. Munson never considered himself a hero, just someone who saw another person in trouble and did what needed to be done.
