Tucson Storm Rescue Teams Save Everyone Safely

When Monday's monsoon turned Tucson streets into rushing rivers, emergency responders made sure everyone got home safe.

The National Weather Service reported at least four swift-water rescues across southern Arizona on September 13, with three happening along the Alamo Wash alone. Rescue teams responded to stranded drivers near 22nd and Kolb, behind Tucson Medical Center, and near 5th Street and Wilmot.

First responders also pulled someone to safety from the Brawley Wash near Picture Rocks. In each rescue, teams navigated dangerous floodwaters to reach drivers who'd gotten stuck when storms turned roadways into flowing channels.

While the storm knocked out power to over 9,000 homes and snapped power poles near Prudence and Broadway, utility crews worked through the night. By 10 a.m. the next morning, only 33 customers remained without electricity.

The storm turned parts of Ina Road in Three Points into what looked like a flowing river. Several roads closed temporarily for safety, including Houghton Road and Wentworth Road north of Andrada.

The Bright Side

Despite the dramatic conditions and property damage, the most important number was zero. Zero lives lost. Zero injuries reported. Every person who needed help got it.

The quick response shows what happens when communities invest in emergency preparedness and trained rescue teams. These responders train year-round for Arizona's intense but brief monsoon season, knowing that when storms hit, minutes matter.

Even Mother Nature seemed to acknowledge the good outcome. As news anchor Valerie Cavazos left the station that evening, a brilliant rainbow stretched across the Tucson sky, a perfect reminder that storms always pass.
