Tukwila Mom Defies 'Vegetative State' Diagnosis After Coma

When doctors told Shane McConnell his wife was in a vegetative state with little chance of waking up, he had one response: he would never bet against Jovita.

He was right. After a brain aneurysm left the Tukwila mom and former city council member in a month-long coma in April 2025, Jovita began defying every prediction. She started breathing on her own, responding to touch, and eventually regained full awareness.

Following specialized treatment in Denver, Jovita has returned home to Tukwila, where she's surrounded by the community she served for years through the city council, fire department, and local food pantry. Her three children and husband are by her side as she continues her recovery.

On May 3, that same community will gather at the Tukwila Community Center for the first Jovita Strong 5K. The race runs from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at 12424 42nd Avenue South, with $40 registration fees going directly toward Jovita's medical expenses.

The financial reality is daunting. Many of the specialized therapies and home modifications Jovita needs aren't covered by insurance. Her family partnered with nonprofit Help Hope Live to bridge the gap between what insurance pays and what recovery actually costs.

The Ripple Effect

Since February, the community has already raised over $7,400 for Jovita's care. The 5K represents more than fundraising. It's Tukwila showing up for someone who spent years showing up for them.

Every dollar raised goes toward verified medical expenses, ensuring Jovita can access the treatments she needs to keep reaching new milestones. Those who can't attend the race can still donate through Help Hope Live's website, where all contributions are tax-deductible.
